Don Bosco Missions was founded in 1991 in Italy to accompany Salesian missionaries who, in 134 countries, in over 3,500 Salesian houses, bring salesian education and professional training to children and young people in difficulty through the missionary style typical of the congregation: a presence and a style based on understanding and appreciation of the cultural, social and religious realities with which they come into contact.

The Salesian Ethnological Missionary Museum (Museo Etnologico Missionario) in Colle Don Bosco began as a missionary exhibit set up at end of the nineteenth century and developed throughout the twentieth century. The objects were brought to Italy from the mission lands where Salesians were present. The explicit goal was awareness raising among the Italian public of the rich diversity of geographic, environmental and cultural contexts within which Salesian missionaries work. The exhibit also attests to the historical development of the Salesian missions.
